Taiwan Government Will Increase the Child Care Subsidy in 2021

 Written By: ???  Edited By: ???, ???, ???

In 2021, our government will increase the child care subsidy to raise the birth rate. The subsidy will be raised from NT$2,500 to NT$5,000 per month. Although the government will increase the subsidy, newlywed couples still do not want to have a child. Nowadays, people are busy with their work, they do not have time to take care of their child. The child care center seems a good choice for parents.

The policy makes parents face the dilemma of choosing a private child care center or a public child care center. However, some parents cannot afford the tuition fee of a private child care center. The tuition fee of a private child care center costs NT$15,000 to NT$17,000 per month. A public child care center only costs NT$9,000 per month. Entering a public child care center is hard because the number of private child care centers is more than the public ones. Recent statistics show that there are 956 private child care centers and 235 public child care centers in Taiwan.

This policy does not help Taiwan increase the birth rate. Raising children depends on having a stable income. Parents cannot afford the expensive tuition fee of a private child care center and entering a public child care center is hard. Thus, they want to take care of their child by themselves. If parents quit their jobs and focus on taking care of their children, families will run into financial difficulties.

Increasing the child care subsidy is not the only way to help Taiwan. Our government must increase the number of public child care centers and build a complete child care system. The policy has to be comprehensive and meet the needs of most parents.

Child Rapist Cho Doo-Soon to Be Released From Jail

 Written By: ???  Edited By: ???, ???, ???

In the notorious Cho Doo-Soon Case, an eight-year-old girl was victimized. Cho Doo-Soon, the criminal, kidnapped and sodomized the girl. He claimed that he was drunk and he did not know what he did to the little girl. The judges sentenced him to only twelve years in prison. He is to be released on December 13, 2020. Can this kind of person be released from jail?

Cho Doo-Soon sodomized the girl in a cruel way. Because of the serious harm, the poor little girl had to get the medical treatment of colostomy. He brought her to the bathroom then took off her pants and clothes. He punched her face then sodomized her. The little girl was found by her parents and they took her to the hospital. She got serious injuries all over her body.

The government makes the “Cho Doo-Soon Law” which clearly stipulates that all the violent criminals must wear the electronic tagging. They will be monitored by police officers after being released. However, criminals might unlock the electronic tagging and commit crimes again. Even the criminals wear the electronic tagging, the fear of the people still cannot be eliminated.

Everyone has to take such child molestation seriously, take action, and condemn the people who claim that they commit crimes because they are drunk. There is no excuse for a reduced sentence. Whether the effect of electronic tagging is limited or not, it shows that the government takes this case really seriously and really does something for society. We cannot indulge criminals like Cho Doon-Soon by allowing them any reduced sentence, not only in South Korea, but around the world.

The First Step Toward The Future: Internship

 Written By: ???  Edited By: ???, ???, ???

Getting an internship is one of many goals for college students because it can bring lots of benefits to their future. Furthermore, in modern times, companies prefer people who have related experiences and skills. Therefore, to college students, getting an internship is quite important.

Through an internship, college students not only realize their interests but also enhance their people skills. Such experience is helpful for them to know the characteristics of different workplaces and to acquire related abilities. From the process of an internship, they can find the direction of their future, learn the ability to communicate, and improve their teamwork. At the same time, they can also understand the operation of companies and acquire problem-solving abilities.

This is the reason why college students are seeking an internship, even if it takes them a lot of time. Huang Yu-Ying, for example, who majored in the Finance Department of Feng Chia University, had longed for the banking industry since she was a child. She took an internship at Chang Hwa Commercial Bank in 2017. Through this internship, she not only had further knowledge about the banking industry but also learned the professional operation of the banking industry. She confirmed that this experience in the banking industry was her aspiration.

To sum up, getting an internship is good for college students to gain valuable experiences. They can experience the working environment in advance, realize what they lack, and strengthen themselves. Therefore, college students should seize the opportunity to get an internship.

“Long-Term Care 2.0” Policy In Taiwan

 Written By: ???  Edited By: ???, ???, ???

In view of the increasing elderly population in Taiwan’s aging society, the government is introducing its “Long-Term Care 2.0” policy. This policy improves the services of "Long-term Care 1.0” and increases other services on the basis of "Long-term Care 1.0.” Originally, “Long-term Care 1.0” offers the elderly home care service, daycare service, meal delivery, etc. And in the “Long-Term Care 2.0” policy, it adds the dementia care service, preventive care service, and hospice care service. Although “Long-term care 2.0” is better than “Long-term Care 1.0,” it still needs further improvement.

The goal of the policy is to establish a sound long-term care system to cope with problems of our aging society, and to ease the financial burden of families in demand of such care. Compared to the “Long-Term Care 1.0,” the “Long-Term Care 2.0” integrates each independent care service together, and establishes a system to organize these services to a set. For families with long-term care needs, the government provides them with subsidies. In this way, people not only get the whole service easily but also buy it cheaply.

However, the “Long-Term Care 2.0” policy still faces problems in terms of manpower, budget, and so on. These problems are considerable challenges for “Long-term care 2.0.” With the growing numbers of the elderly, the manpower of the care services cannot cater to their needs anymore. In addition, all nursing homes are not included in the “Long-term care 2.0” budget arrangement, so the situation may cause some safety problems, such as the fire accident in the Neihu nursing home on September 22.

Therefore, to really make things easier for family members and caregivers, the government should improve the policy immediately. The “Long-term care 2.0” policy should be improved in all aspects so that the government can handle the increasing elderly population. In this manner, the policy can improve the quality of life for the elders and caregivers.

The Aim of Going to College

Written By: ???  Edited By: ???, ???, ???

The aim of being a college student is to become the top of the pyramid. There is a pyramid set that has four stratum which can distinguish four different kinds of learning conditions. At the top of the pyramid is specializing in a few fields. Second, is specializing in one field of study. Third, is learning different skills but not specializing in them. Last, is learning one thing without gaining any real knowledge.

The reason why we have to be at the top of the pyramid is because of three important dimensions: education, job, and money. Education is a stepping stone of finding a job. Finding a job will allow us to have enough money to pay our expenses of living. For example, expenses like food, clothing, housing, transportation and so on. All the steps are for living independently. Everyone must work and earn money to bear living expenses, or just become a NEET, an abbreviation for “Not in Education, Employment or Training.” If we start working right after high school instead of entering university, we will not have enough education to get a decent job.

To find employment, we must have abilities in some fields. No one will pay a salary for a person who does not have any skills. If we do not have any skills and a minimum level of education, which is a Bachelor’s degree, we will spend most of our time working for a minimum wage. Our life will be a vicious cycle of not earning enough money to pay for necessary life expenses.

In conclusion, the aim of studying in university should be to gain multiple talents and skills. Students should take advantage of the four years spent in university to concentrate on learning and self-improvement. After graduating from university, the degree and knowledge of different fields will help a new graduate get a job.

Fake Meat Can Be the Savior

Written By: ???  Edited By: ???, ???, ???

Recently, Beyond Meat has become quite popular all over the world. Beyond Meat is a company founded by Ethan Brown in California in 2009. He wants to solve some problems caused by the meat industries. Beyond Meat produces plant-based meat substitutes. It has received investments from venture companies. The products of Beyond Meat are sold in supermarkets in the U.S. as well as in other countries.

To reduce global warming, lots of people choose to become vegetarians. They want to reduce the pollution of the earth by consuming alternative proteins. Therefore, Beyond Meat came into being. There are three advantages of Beyond Meat. First, Beyond Meat is easily available in Taiwan. Second, the texture of Beyond Meat is similar to real meat so that it can be widely accepted. Third, the biggest advantage of Beyond Meat is that it can decrease carbon emissions by substituting animal meat. Animals produce too much carbon emissions through digestive processes.

Beyond Meat is a highly processed food, containing saturated fat, so it may damage our health. In order to make its texture and taste closer to the real meat, Beyond Meat adds some artificial flavorings. Such as phosphate (磷酸鹽) and sodium ions (鈉離子), the former causes kidney diseases and the latter may cause high blood pressure.

In conclusion, Beyond Meat influences our daily life, both positively and negatively. Beyond Meat can be a new choice for people’s diet. It is an interesting choice to try while you are out of choice.

An Unwise Decision: National Medical Care Available for International Patients

By Hsu Hsin I

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 is well-controlled by Central Epidemic Command Center’s (CECC)
epidemic prevention and treatment, CECC office announce that foreign patients are welcome to seek medical care in Taiwan with certain conditions from August 1st, which made our medical personnel appeal to postpone implementation.

Putting our medical personnel in danger in order to cooperate with helping foreign patients is unwise because our personnel cannot take any risk of getting infection during this serious situation. Besides, the medical resources is valuable and limited that it could not afford too many patients. Not only foreigners visit Taiwan for treatment has an impact on health care system, but also residents are worried the transmission would be expanded after foreign patients come.

According to the report, there are 39 increase of confirmed cases within three months in Taiwan, and people presume that the novel coronavirus would spread rapidly and out of controlled if the official insist on provide medical care to foreign patients. As stated above, many people are annoying about the decision, trying to appeal to CECC office stop it.

Instead of helping people from worldwide, CECC office should try to do more effort on epidemic prevention completely. To be honest, Taiwan better minds our own business before the epidemic ebb.

Capital Punishment Must Be Advocated

By Hsu Hsin I

Retaining capital punishment is in order to curb crime, and thus capital punishment has been retaining in criminal law for long time. In addition to deter crimes, capital punishment can also prevent criminals from committing crimes once again. Therefor, Taiwan has to advocate for death penalty to deter crime rate.

To discuss whether Taiwan government should advocate capital punishment or not, I extremely support our government retain this criminal law. First of all, death penalty has an effect on the social environment include limit people’s behavior and prevent people from commit felonious crime. Second, when criminals are sentenced to death, it warns both criminals and people that no one could violate and flout law.

According to some science research, people never change. “Personality is part of our biology. Life events still influence our behaviors, yet we must acknowledge the power of personality in understanding future behavior as well.” Christopher Nave, a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Riverside, said. For instance, criminals who use to do larceny crime would never change unless they are sentenced to death. That is to say, death penalty may not control everyone’s thoughts, but it still limits people’s behavior, trying to force them follow the rules.

The criminal in murder case at Huashan grassland was sentenced to death in the beginning. However, the judge sentenced the murderer to life imprisonment in second instance because he turned himself in. This judgement was hard to convince both crime victim and most of people because the man who murdered and dismembered the victim should not be forgiven at all. People could not be convinced by the judgement because the criminal did commit sexual assault and dismember crime, which had to sentence to death in criminal law.

The judgement report in April 7th, 2020 of Huashan dismember case reminds people again how important death penalty is, and it has to be advocated in our criminal law. People all knows that without carrying out capital punishment to criminals who deserve it, there would be more people try to break law and imitate criminal offence. Capital punishment, the most severe punishment has to retain for its effect of crime prevention and warns people do not violate law.

Portrait of Friedrich Nietzsche (1906) by Edvard Munch (1863-1944)

Portrait of Friedrich Nietzsche (1906) & Der Schrei der Natur (The Scream 1893)

Even if we don't know much about the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, or Expressionism (the school he is most associated with), we still know and can immediately identify the masterpiece of his--Der Schrei der Natur (The Scream).

The highly distorted contours, of the foregrounded screamer and the backgrounded water body and skies, force the viewer to anchor her/his gaze along the straight stretch of the bridge, until the two shadowed figures at the far end make her/him wonder again. Enigmatic nature, obscure passers-by, and the macabre alien-like countenance, all contribute to extreme disturbing viewing experience of this painting. The viewer can be as panicking as the screamer and a certain life-depriving experience is shared.

With less intensity and brighter hues, the hand that wrought the many-version-ed Scream depicted Friedrich Nietzsche in a non-panicking  and a lot more pensive mood. The sky is light with bright yellow instead of grained with streaming blood, the ensuring visage of Nietzsche offers the viewer's gaze a relaxed rest. Slightly leaning against the thin walling of a balcony, Nietzsche mans the walled-in darker hues which lay down a slant but sure foundation for this painting.

What bothers me is the town-like lump on the left which I cannot quite make out, but the blue patches on either side of Nietzsche make for an accidental pair of wings which adds a humorous touch serves as an amusing distraction.

Sir Philip Sidney on Delight and Laughter

Like Plato, Sidney has a negative take on laughter, which in his understanding comes from sneering at others' deformity, misery, or inferiority in any form. While drawing the distinction between delight and laughter, Sidney again reminds us of one of his predecessors, Demetrius, the author of De Elocutione, which distinguishes "the humorous" (to provoke laughter) and "the charming" (to give pleasure), with the former being typical of buffoons and the latter being proper of wits.

According to Sidney, laughter comes from derision, not delight. Laughter is an expression of scorn; delight is an experience of joy. When we laugh at others, we laugh at their misery; when we laugh at ourselves, we try to deal with our own. Laughter, in other words, pains people. This viewpoint may be somewhat extreme and such a distinction may be least convincing, but we are given the opportunity to peep into some of the earliest efforts that lay down the foundation for humor studies. Here are two paragraphs taken from "The Defence of Poesie" or "An Apology of Poetry" (1595):

But our comedians [may well refer to comedy playwrights] think there is no delight without laughter; which is very wrong, for though laughter may come with delight, yet cometh it not of [from] delight, as though delight should be the cause of laughter; but well may one thing breed both together: nay, rather in themselves they have, as it were, a kind of contrariety; for delight we scarcely do, but in things that have a conveniency to ourselves, or to the general nature; laughter almost ever cometh of [from] things most disproportioned to ourselves and natureDelight hath a joy in it, either permanent or present. Laughter hath only a scornful tickling. For example, we are ravished with delight to see a fair woman, and yet are far from being moved to laughter. We laugh at deformed creatures, wherein certainly we cannot delight. We delight in good chances, we laugh at mischances; we delight to hear the happiness of our friends or country, at which he were worthy to be laughed at that would laugh; we shall contrarily laugh sometimes to find a matter quite mistaken and go down the hill against the bias,* in the mouth of some such men, as for the respect of them one shall be heartily sorry, yet he cannot choose but laugh; and so is rather pained than delighted with laughter. Yet deny I not but that they may go well together; for as in Alexander's picture** well set out, we delight without laughter, and in twenty mad antics we laugh without delight, so in Hercules, painted with his great beard and furious countenance, in a woman's attire, spinning at Omphale's *** commandment, it breedeth both delight and laughter. For the representing of so strange a power in love procureth delight, and the scornfulness of the action stirreth laughter.

But I speak to this purpose, that all the end of the comical part be not upon such scornful matters as stirreth laughter only, but, mixed with it, that delightful teaching which is the end of poesy. And the great fault even in that point of laughter, and forbidden plainly by Aristotle, is that they stir laughter in sinful things, which are rather execrable than ridiculous: or in miserable, which are rather to be pitied than scorned (Sidney 358).

* Contrary to its expected course. The balls used in lawn bowling have a bias, a peculiarity in weight or shape that causes them to swerve (Sidney 358n9).

** Plutarch, in his Life of Alexander 4, discusses Apelles' (4th c. B.C.E.) famous painting of Alexander [Robinson's note] (Sidney 358n1).

*** Queen of Lydia, whom the legendary hero served fro 3 years as a slave in order to be purified of a murder; during that time he fell in love with her (Sidney 358n2).

An Introduction to Cryptocurrency

(photo source: "So You Want to Get Started in Cryptocurrency." Popular Mechanics. By Alexander George. <https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/security/a18930173/start-bitcoin-cryptocurrency/>. Davide Demarchi*

Since November 2017 following by a price surge, which reached 2000% (from 1.000$ to 20.000$) in late December, Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies dominated the headlines all across the world. Previously associated with black markets and the deep web, in the last 2 years, cryptocurrencies have attracted a huge amount of capitals, going from 7 billion USD of total market capitalization in 2015, to almost 17 billion in 2016, and touching the all-time-high of 830 billion in December 2017. This 8 years’ constant uptrend have generated a huge hype around this market, but what are cryptocurrencies?

Bitcoin was first announced in 2008 and implemented in 2009 by someone, under a mysterious name of Satoshi Nakamoto. It was the first Peer-to-Peer electronic cash system. And the underlying technology, the blockchain, which is a distributed server in which every node (A.K.A. computer connected with the network) runs a full register of the transactions and the balances, updating in real-time. This system prevents the possibility of manipulations or being controlled by a single actor. This concept had flown under the radar of mainstream attention for 8 years, but it still created a fertile environment for programmers and developers to create new projects starting from the same ideas.

Along with Bitcoin, which is the main cryptocurrency, mostly for the fame instead of its technological superiority, many other cryptocurrencies have popped out for the last of 2 years. In many cases, those cryptocurrencies use Initial Coin Offering (ICO) to gain capitals from investors. ICO is the crypto version of an Initial Public Offering, which stocks are substituted with newly created coins or tokens. With the ICO formula, new projects were able to collect 107 million in 2016 and 1.7 billion in 2017 for their development.

But with great possibility comes great risk: as an unregulated market, any kind of behavior is possible: manipulation or pump-and-dump schemes happen every day. With over 1500 coins currently being developed, there are every kind of project: from legitimate ones like Ethereum, that rapidly became the second largest currency; to suspicious Ponzi schemes. Bitconnect is the most clamorous scheme which reached a market capitalization of almost 3 billion before it crumbled in front of 2 cease-and-desist orders from U.S. authorities and it is now facing various class actions from scammed investors.

As many observers pointed out the situation in this particular market is similar to the early 2000’s Dot-com bubble. With dozens of new coins being created every month, in many cases without clear project beneath the coins, it is really easy for newcomers to be taken by the hype and end up with the pockets full of useless coins. At the same time, it is undeniable that we are facing a modern technology with many possibilities of usages. The blockchain is being experimented by many enterprises, institutions and even governments. For example, Sierra Leone held the first elections regulated by the blockchain this year. Most of the projects we see now are still embryonal, almost certainly, some of them will become trustworthy and well-established companies in the future.

Investing in any market is risky and the possibilities to lose a part or all the investment is always there, so keep in mind the following two simple but effective recommendations: First, never invest more than what you can afford to lose; and second, do your own researches, you would not throw your money away, so do not put them into something you do not believe. And let’s hope to see you millionaires in the near future.

This is America: Sugarcoating Culture

(photo source: "Childish Gambino's New 'This Is America' Video Mirrors the Powerful Imagery Found in Donald Glover's 'Atlanta'--Watch." IndieWire.      In the early May of 2018, musician Childish Gambino, the alter ego of actor Donald Glover, released a new song, "This is America," with an insightful and shocking music video on YouTube. This song and video instantly gained attention and was shared and discussed by millions of people. The song implies how America deals with gun control and racial issues. The chorus is a perfect match for the rap music it sings to; such a combination gives the song remarkable depth.
Donald Glover is a versatile personality. He first started his acting life through making comedy videos on YouTube in the early 2000s. Although only being in his early 30's, Glover extends his talent into different areas including acting, stand-up comedy, song writing, music production, and even TV show writing and production. In the music and shows he produces, such as the number one hit, "Redbone" from Childish Gambino's last album "Awaken, My Love!," TV series "Atlanta," and his new single "This is America," Glover talks about racial issues in America. He tries to convey the message that although the racial problem is gaining attention over the years, the real problem is still unsolved, a lot of African Americans are still struggling with their identities and livelihoods. And the particular reason why this new single blew about only after a few hours of its release is mainly because of its graphic and insinuating video.

The lyrics of the song is dark and purposeful and it flows in a joyful rhythm. The lyrics deals with how black community in America is influenced by popular culture, and its belief that being rich and having a good life is the number one priority for one's life. Therefore, for young African Americans, the fast way out of poverty is through selling drugs or other illegal acts, which further develops into gun control problems. Another issue being discussed herein is exactly the gun control issue. Easy access to guns in America has been a big controversy over the years. The problem of gun control also contributes to large-scale casualties when hate crimes are committed towards African Americans. Gun control, for some reason, seems surprisingly difficult for the U.S. government to deal with even though the solution seems pretty easy. The truth is, behind a ban on guns, benefits of gun manufacturers and their business associates are to be affected. This explains why gun control is difficult for the U.S. government and this reveals that the U.S. government values benefits for the few as a priority over the lives of many.

In the music video, the artist dances with a group of young African Americans in uniform throughout the video. And behind them, the audience can see that there are always horrible things happening in the background. This can be taken as when dealing with serious issues, America uses entertainment to draw away the attention and to sugarcoat the facts. In the video, there are some scenes can be seen as the artist paying his tribute to some tragedies happened in the past years, such as the Charleston Church Shooting in 2015 and the Stephon Clark incident in the early 2018. Glover is not shy of acting out shooting and violence in the video, which makes the catchy and joyful rhythm seem very contradictory to what they promise. This also leaves the audiences with an even deeper impression.

Some people are not pleased with how Glover portraits black culture in his lyrics and video. Because some think that Glover is accusing some black creators of enhancing the stereotypes of African Americans by having associations with drugs, guns, and violence. No matter what one might think this music video is trying to convey, there is no doubt that Glover forced the world to face this never-ending problem in America and rips open the ugly wound that no one wants to be reminded of with a mere four-minute video.

YouTube: The New Window Shopping

Penny Lai

As social media becomes the most popularized form of communication and even entertainment, more and more Internet personalities have popped up. A YouTuber is a person who creates and distributes contents on the free video-sharing website, YouTube. A YouTuber can make money through partnering with the website and shares the revenue with YouTube by playing commercials embedded in his or her videos. If the YouTuber has certain number of subscribers and the viewer counts are stable, the revenue can be very impressive. Now in Taiwan, being a YouTuber is one of the top career choices for the young generation. Why are YouTubers so fascinating? What are the factors that make Internet personalities seems so glamorous?

As viewers scroll through channels on YouTube, they can see various kinds of channels, from daily vloggers to educational channels. However, most of them have a similar feature—the flawless lifestyle they present to their audiences. This phenomenon occurs mostly among vlogging channels. Vloggers are creators who record pieces of moments in their daily life and compose them into videos as their diaries. It is easy for viewers to get tired of the vloggers’ content if they live a normal everyday-life just as everyone else. Therefore creators have to up their games constantly, either with exciting activities or expensive belongings.

It seems that the more a vlogger “flexes,” the more subscribers he gets. Expensive clothing, first-class traveling and mansions are the necessities for a popular content. What’s more, the creators often build the image that they are only ordinary people who work hard on their dreams so they get to have the expensive things. It is like the new window shopping for the young generation: looking at things one does not have but covet and dreaming about living a “perfect life” one day. This scenario could mean more than mere materialism; it is more like a modern version of the “American Dream.” Everyone wishes for an expensive life and assumes that luxurious things amount to success. Consequently, social media users, out of envy, tend to follow Internet personalities that seem to have a perfect life.

However, viewers should keep in mind that most of the images the Internet celebrities create are not real. The images are mostly presented by the celebrities by design and on purpose because they know exactly what they need to sell in order to get attention. It is nice to encourage viewers to pursue their dreams and live a better life, but people should also know that being successful is usually not about the things you own and the personal image you create for the public.

Monolingual Ruins the Trick

Monolingual Ruins The Trick
So you speak English-only, right?
By Sydney Weng
One of the first few things you’ll encounter in a SLA (Second Language Acquisition) course is that it is generally ideal to have bilingual instructors rather than monolingual ones. Which is why it is particularly bemusing for me to read comments that seem to elevate monolingual native speakers of English and put down non-native-speaking English teachers on Facebook forums for English Teachers in Taiwan.

Surely, if you didn’t at least read something about SLA you must have realized after ‘years and years’ of experience that being a native speaker doesn’t guarantee effective teaching methods. It simply means that you speak relatively fluent English than those who haven’t mastered the language. It also proves that unlike your bilingual peers, you probably do not have the faintest idea on what the brain has to go through when acquiring a foreign language. Nor do you understand how grammar from the first language may affect acquisition of the second language. Thus attesting to the fact that monolingual native speakers are more likely suited for children who are prepped for successive early bilingualism than students with other needs.

Unfortunately, Taiwan is by no means anywhere near providing curriculums or programs that ensure early bilingualism for children under the age of seven.

There are two main trends that dominate ESL classrooms in Taiwan at the moment. The most dominant one includes institutions and programs that focus on student performance in standardized tests, while the second most dominant trend features classrooms that aim to provide immersive teaching environments for children under the age of seven. The former features bilingual teaching methods and is widely implemented in public and private institutions. The latter favors monolingual teaching methods and targets children who are young enough to learn language with both hemispheres of the brain.

That being said, it’s rather obvious that the necessity for native speakers mostly exist in monolingual classrooms for children ‘under the age of seven’. Yet, if we take a closer look at the resources and hours put into implementing immersive learning environments in Taiwan, one may realize that very few institutions actually do provide programs that ensure effectiveness through a concentrated and secluded environment for students to gradually absorb the emotional and cultural nuances in a foreign language. Thus, allowing us to reexamine the paranoid obsession over favoring native speakers over non-native speakers in any ESL classroom.

It’s incredibly true that many bilingual or ESL instructors do not speak flawless English. It is also painstakingly unfortunate that SLA teaching standards in Taiwan are shamefully low for both bilingual and monolingual classrooms. Plenty of TESOL-trained instructors can barely string a simple sentence while a lot of native speakers speak worse English than professionally trained and experienced bilingual teachers. Nonetheless, the purpose of my argument is not to contradict hardworking and qualified teachers or to fuss over who makes the least grammar mistakes, but to invite an understanding that native speakers aren’t always the most ideal choice when it comes to hiring ESL instructors.  Or even so, to point out that monolingual native speakers are the least ideal for teaching English as a Second language.

Growing up in the so-called ‘bu-xi-ban (cram-school)’ industry for two decades of my life has taught me two things about being an ESL (English as a Second Language) instructor: 1) Your nationality or mother-tongue has nothing to do with with your effectiveness as an instructor. It’s mostly based on effort and experience. 2) If you happen to be white and come from a country where English is the official language, people assume you’re qualified to ‘teach English’.

The result of these choices often lead to a stubborn preference over Canadians, Americans or British citizens with a polished Oxford accent. In many cases, a lot of these ‘teachers’ do not have much experience in acquiring a second language themselves. Let alone understanding the lexical and syntactic struggles native speakers of Mandarin suffer from while learning English. This is completely understandable because English can literally get you anywhere in the world. Furthermore, as long as there is one person in the room incapable of communicating in anything but English, it is often considered polite in Taiwan to drop the Mandarin and start speaking in English.
A lot of parents or students are under the impression that hiring someone with a passport from the UK or the US ensure them with a qualified English instructor. Unfortunately, blue passports don’t guarantee good teachers . Those come with time spent training, money spent on degrees and a general ability to communicate effectively. By ignorantly endorsing ‘stereotypically foreign-looking’ native speakers for the sake of speaking relatively ‘proper English’ not only discourages experienced bilingual teachers, but also invites racism and supremacy in the industry.

The problems with bilingualism, where many tend to nit-pick on, is that for those who fall into the category of ‘early bilingualism’ often go through systematic glitches where their brain borrows words or phrases from both mother-tongues, thus creating an illusion of imperfect grammar. Those who are part of the ‘late bilingualism’ group may suffer from occasional grammar mistakes when producing authentic content. In spite of these minor misgivings, which can be avoided with hard-working class-prep, bilinguals are a lot more capable of introducing a second language to a student due to their inherent knowledge on both languages. Thus providing them with the advantage to further explain, pinpoint and solve problems most ESL students encounter while learning a second language.

So for the parents who have trust issues with experienced bilingual teachers and monolingual native English speakers who have the intrinsic need to act as grammar nazis to belittle non-native speakers: There are many things to consider beyond ‘flawless’ grammar. So before one shoots a comment like “perhaps you should teach your own native language”, think again, because teaching is a process of communicating and problem-solving. If an instructor’s only attribute and value to the classroom is ‘proper grammar’, it’s best we turn to Siri instead. I bet you she’s smarter than the most of us.

On English Teaching

By Crystal Yao

This is an interview with Sydney, a graduate student from our English Department and an English teacher. She teaches English to kids from ages 8 -15. For her teenage students, she tries to incorporate literature, the news, arts in her curriculum. Here is a video about her job: https://youtu.be/ct9CViLDlxo. One day she shared something that caught our attention, so we decided to interview her.

1.       Can you tell me what happened on the day you wrote your feelings and put it on Facebook

This is the original post if you need it for the reference:
As an English teacher in Taipei, I have access to a few online ‘Facebook groups’ where local and foreign ESL teachers use to post job listings or ask questions. Most of the members are foreigners who speak English as their first language. Most of the content posted and discussed in these groups are generally positive or just neutral and informative. However, there are cases where people often like to voice out their negativity with little attempt to aid those who’ve posted questions in the group. I’m quite often irritated by ‘native speakers’ of English who attack teachers that do not speak English as their first language. I’ve even heard comments asking them to ‘teach their own native language’. I understand that those who do not speak English as their first language may suffer from grammatical errors. But that is completely natural since it is, NOT their native language to begin with. Yet, one does not need to be a native speaker to teach English effectively. It is essential that an English instructor must be able to master the language, but to compare that mastery to a native speaker is uncalled-for. The trend in second language acquisition favors bilingual instructors because it is relatively easier for bilinguals to understand how two different languages tend to confuse each other due to the different natures of the target language and the student’s native tongue. It surprises me how native speakers just assume that they are more qualified when many monolinguals have little experience with learning a second language.

2.       What do you think about our English education system in Taiwan? Is there any chance to change something?

Oh! Don’t get me started! I’ll try to be concise.
I disagree with almost everything in our educational system. This is not to say that Western educational systems are better or perfect (that’s impossible). It simply means that we need to start changing things before we’ve drowned our own future in ignorance and fear.
For starters, a lot of the information we receive plays with our memory rather than helps us understand the material. Our memory mechanism works and expands when we’re young, but we need further learnings to enable ourselves to pass on what we hold in our memory. If we don’t, how can we pass on what we learn and remember to children and expect them to enjoy learning?
In terms of learning English as a second language, I detest the fact that they have the least experienced teachers teaching beginners. This is the stupidest thing yet! For Beginner’s English, vocabulary may be the least important; it should be course which introduces a foreign language and does so with experience and patience. That’s not something you expect from fresh graduates who have no idea how to apply theoretical training to field work.

3.       As an English graduate, what would you suggest undergraduates who want to be English teachers?

Be responsible and be creative. The former should be easy if you have a conscience and understand your power as a teacher over the next generation. The latter can be a hard road because society likes to play it safe. But progress can only be manifested through experimenting new things till better methods are discovered. We’re dealing with a generation consumed by technology. A generation with shorter attention spans and bigger appetites to satisfy. Be ready to try new things and endure backlashes from your predecessors. It’s not going to be easy, but it’s definitely going to be fun. Trust me, kids are much more interesting than the adults around us. Being a teacher guarantees a healthy dose of frustration and inspiration. It provides you the perfect environment to learn and reflect, which inevitably teaches you to become a better person in the long run.

The Line Between Entertainment and Ignorance

By Penny Lai

When watching a comedy shows, people laugh because they can relate to the jokes, and the jokes or the lines are cleverly designed or serve their purpose. To entertain people and make them laugh is not an easy task, so the comedians or the joke writers must possess a certain level of knowledge and intelligence of how to crack a laugh without offending people, especially when the material is controversial.

For the past few months, there are several pieces of news about university students crossing the line in some school activities by pressuring the freshmen to act out some humiliating postures for the sake of “entertainment.” And in the barbecue event of English Department of SHU, the sophomores named the teams in puns based on off-color jokes, which caused quite a bit of a fuss on the DCard forum. There is nothing wrong with having fun by trying to be creative and make people laugh. However, when the jokes serve no purpose and make people uncomfortable or even offended, it should not be tolerated but should be swept under the rug and called a mindless joke.

People would expect to see highly educated students have some sense of decency. However, in many cases, such an expectation is often failed. The jokes may seem innocuous, but they actually show that even highly-educated students do not have the sensibility for decent wording and to decide on what is funny and what is not. And the interesting thing is that the most “entertaining” things they can think of are all sex related. Perhaps society suppresses sex related issues too hard and, as a result, young adults are made so curious as to doff the suppression eagerly. Good jokes do not have to involve or suggest sex in order to make people laugh. Even if they do, the wording would be appropriately polished according to the taste of the audience. After all, a nerdy academic joke can rarely crack a smile on the face of a hearty builder and vice versa.

It is understandable that schools try their best not to interfere students’ activities and affairs.
However, universities should also set up some basic rules to prevent students from crossing the line. Being creative and humorous are good things, but no matter how creative a mind is, there are always public opinions and moral standards to consider. Most importantly, when holding events in the name of the school, students should stay aware that they are shouldering the reputation of their schools, what one says and acts can easily be placed under inspection by the public to scrutinize their school. Behaving and voicing oneself in a manner to match the identity of an educated intellect should be a good thing to keep in mind throughout one’s college days.

On Translation

By Crystal Yao

As English majors, we learn important skills for reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Why are we learning in college things we have been learning since elementary school? Of course, school is a place for learning and for readying students for the next stage in life. We learn reading to acquire knowledge effectively, listening to pick up information, writing to put things in order, and speaking to communicate with others. Among those skills, personally, I regard speaking as the most challenging one, though it may seem trifling to some people.

Recently I have been taking a class of translation and interpreting. What is translation? Some people may think it is just translating one language to another; others may think it is to get across to the listener what the speaker is trying to convey. But is it just this simple? The answer is "no". Most people can speak basic English; however, that doesn't mean they can translate. There are times when people speak with some heavy accent that we can barely understand. This is why we need a translator to help people communicate.

Translation is a complicated process human beings are capable of while there is hardly a scientific calculation or a mathematical equation to program a machine to do it as proficiently. The process involves the work of a professional translator, usually, a native speaker or one who has studied the target language extensively. The translator will translate the text into another text in another language while staying faithful to the original in both its denotation and connotation, and securing similar tone and style in the target langauge. If you have tried Google translation, you may sometimes find that it fails to get the gist of the document and mis-translation is common. It cannot convey the intended mood nor the embedded culture that undertone the text in the source language. Making a translated piece attend to cultural subtleties and lingual intricacies are still beyond the computer technology of today. Performing the task of translation involve many variables. In addition to language ability and grammar, taboos, traditions, customs, and beliefs are what a professional translator is acquainted with to make translation possible.

The most common two modes of interpreting are simultaneous and consecutive interpreting; former is done alongside the verbal delivery while the latter is done at breaks made for the interpreter. I have been learning both recently and I think it is very difficult to do. Like all the things I mention above, translating is a very challenging job that demands us to make efforts.

Does the “Drug War” Serve Its Purpose?

source: pixabay (CC0 public domain)

"War is not the answer, because only love can conquer hate."
                                                                      -- Marvin Gaye

by Penny Lai

With the thriving of mass media, it is easy and common for people to receive the information or images of drugs. It is more than often that they are shown in a way of negative, sinful, and crimeful kind of images. And the concept of fighting the drug cartels, arresting drug abusers, and cleaning off every last bit of the drugs on this world can bring happiness and peace to this world seems to be what people have in mind. The “war on drug” has gone off for decades in America, but the rate of drug abuse and transaction has no significant decrease. In the meanwhile, main stream media and mass culture are using and creating drug-consuming images as if it were acceptable. So perhaps there are better approaches to control the problem that has last more than a hundred years, and make the world a better place.

In 1970’s, Nixon first used the phrase, “drug war” due to the fear of high percentage of heroin usage by the American soldiers during the Vietnam War, and the rising smuggling rate of the marijuana from the Mexico border. Thus, from the very beginning, marijuana was made for the target of the drug war. However, marijuana has lower addiction tendency than most of the common drugs, even lower than nicotine and alcohol. And unlike other synthetic drugs which might hurt major organs or brains, marijuana mostly affects the lungs if it is being used with tobacco by smoking. However, the knowledge most people have on marijuana is mostly wrong or incomplete, and still, nothing can stop them from judging and arguing with others base on their misconception. Moreover, marijuana has been proved with positive medical use such as a natural painkiller, tranquilizer, and a cancer blocker. There are still a lot of possibilities on marijuana which have yet to be discovered, because the laws and regulations can slow down the research process. Of course, anything can be bad once used incorrectly or excessively. Perhaps some drugs can serve very positive purpose if people open their minds and do comprehensive researches, they can benefit the society with some pleasant results. It is only wise to understand the nature of drugs, the definition and standard of addiction before the government and people set the targets and fire the guns.

In Nixon’s speech on war on drugs, he declared drug abusers as “the public enemy number one”. The original message emphasized on "prevention of new addicts, and the rehabilitation of those who are addicted", but it did not get as much as attentions as the term “war on drugs.” This message unknowingly enhanced the hatred and conflicts toward drug abusers. However, are the segregation and condemnation from society what the drug addicts really need? There is a number of researches show that the feeling of loneliness or isolation from society can easily lead people into substance addiction. And after people become drug or alcohol abusers, not only do they have to fight against the physical addiction, but also have to bear with a tremendous sense of solitude, since they are not accepted by society. The lack of care and support can make addiction harder to overcome. People often think that drug abusers are morally flawed people who needed to be locked up behind the bars. However, perhaps they just need some medical care and emotional supports in their lives. They are merely people who made a wrong decision on drugs rather than on positive recourses.

Is it an effective way to solve the problems by catching all the drug abusers and put them in to jails? There are several cases from countries which tried an unusual method with some successful outcome. Portugal, as a model example, in 2001, decriminalized all drugs. The authorities will not arrest in people who hold illicit drugs under 10 days of supply. Instead, they inform them of related regulations to abide by, which the offenders will have to attend “discussion panels.” They provided drug abusers with help, such as prescribed treatments and therapies. The result over the years is more than satisfactory, not only the abuse rate dropped significantly, but the rates of HIV infection and drug overdose had reduced greatly. Because in a society where the drug users are less targeted for and stigmatized, the higher chances are there for them to get out to seek help and care.

When people and politicians talk about drugs, it is always considered sensitive and seems bias. However, the rule of disciplining teenagers applies to this issue perfectly: the more you ban something to them, the more interesting it seems to them. People should not judge before acknowledging what they need to know, it goes the same for the governments. Do not walk the same path of the Prohibition in 1920s, which ended up benefiting no one but the illegal organizations. This world does not need more hatred and misunderstanding. People should find the most suitable way as the solutions instead of the ones that seem most effective, but no more than dusting it under the carpet.

President Trump: Has America Lost Its Mind?

“If you don’t read the newspaper, you are uninformed; if you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed. What are the responsibilities you all (the media) have? To tell the truth, not just to be the first.”
                                                                       -- Denzel Washington

by Penny Lai

On November 2016, the presidential election of America shocked the world with its result. As almost all of the main stream media predicted that Clinton should be the one that wins, Trump took all the people by surprise. What happened? Were the opinion polls not accurate? Or were the media pinning too much on one side and ignoring the voice from other people? For outsiders from other countries, it seems like the America has gone crazy due to all the impertinent statements from Trump which had been broadcasted endlessly during the campaign. The image of Trump which people have received from the media made it hard to believe that an advanced country would elect him the President. There are few analyses that can conclude this phenomenon in terms of America election system and the information gap between city and suburb.

Everyone knows the American election system with the catchy phrase: Winner takes all. The political stand of every state in America is always consistent. Big cities like New York and California have always stand on Democratic Party’s side; while places where are considered to be more conservative, such as Texas and Arizona, mostly support the Republican Party. And there is one exception: Florida, the swing state, which does not have a solid political position. In this election, Florida was considered the crucial point to Trump’s triumph. However, dose this election system of America really reflect people’s voice? Perhaps this system fails to serve the people good and, worse still, injustice to some candidates. Because the popular votes, the total votes from the people, not electors, shows the voice clear and loud. Hillary Clinton won 48 % of the popular vote to Trump’s 42%, which outpaced him by almost 2.9 million votes. American were not crazy, they just got tricked by the election system.

Still, Trump had won a good amount of the popular votes. This means a huge portion of the voting population supported him even after all the controversial statements he made. There are several reasons to that and one of the biggest and most successful one is that he knows what the people from outside of the internationalized cities want. States like New York and California are true mixing pots of the world. And citizens in those cities have perspectives that are more liberal and internationalized. However, states that are in more suburban areas are more conservative compared to the world-famous states. People in those places might think that America is going down because of the immigrants and the Muslims. They think that the Americans are losing their jobs because going into America is too easy and people from other countries take all the opportunities away. This widespread view can be attributed to the result of information gap. And Trump seizes their hearts with all the extreme statements he made, though they were considered to be sexist, racist, or homophobic by the world.

For sure this election concerns more issues than just the system of voting and information gap; however, there are the two major points. People can easily be deceived by the media if they do not try to gather more information on their own and think independently. Now is the time when the technology develops faster than the speed of the bullets. It goes without saying that the media plays a role that is more important than ever. And from this American election, it is not hard to see the impartiality of each medium. It is not wrong to take a stance, but when the media are reporting information to people, no matter how impertinent a candidate is, the media should always stay just and true. Because this not only influences the decent publicity, but also affects the minds and conceptions of the audiences.

Free the Nipple

“Blindness separates people from things; deafness
separates people from people.” -- Helen Keller

by Gill Chi

Free the Nipple is a social movement launched by a film maker Lina Esco in 2013 to promote gender equality. Supporters of this movement argue that people have double standards on male and female breasts and nipples. People allow males to bare their breasts but discourage females to expose their breasts in public, and this leads to mass discrimination against women through a general denial of the female body. This movement is not about encouraging women to show their upper body anytime anywhere, but about disconnecting the female body off from sexual arousal. This movement aims to legalize women’s right to their body politics and to promote general gender equality throughout western society.

Although some states in America amend their laws and allow women breasts being uncovered in public, women are still faced with ridiculous charges against them if they show their breasts or nipples: weather problems, other legal problems, violation of social order, obscenity in public, etc. For example, a lady from the City of Phoenix was accused because of the exposing of her upper body in 2005. All charges against her were actually invalid in New York City, where concerning laws had been changed 15 years earlier. And yet the lady from Phoenix was adjudicated of 29,000 US dollar reparation.

And in 2015, in order to make amend regulations that effect mandatory removal of on-line photos of female upper bodies (self-willedly taken and uploaded), an Icelander student Adda Smaradottir launched Free the Nipple campaign again, encouraging females to upload their bare-breasted pictures to Facebook, and tag “FreeTheNipple” on Twitter. This movement has the Icelandic member Björt Ólafsdottir’s support, she uploaded a picture of herself being uncovered to support these teenagers in action.

The movie Free the Nipple was on the big screen in 2014. This movie is about a group of passionate young women protesting against laws and regulations suppressing the female body. They staged a highly artistic protest through their performances and graffiti on the streets of New York. The movie was produced in 2012 was not available to the public until one year later. Therefore, Free the Nipple was launched in 2013.

When people talk about gender equality, the first thing that need to be done is to eliminate the prejudice they have on the female body. If a man can take off his shirt whenever he feels like, then a woman should enjoy the same no less. After all, it is a person’s choice of and right to her own body, without intention to hurt or affect anyone else. Hence, other people do not have the right to judge and certainly should not have a say in another person’s body.
